The data behind our Input-Output model

Emsi produces its own regional, disaggregated labour market datasets, as currently available in Analyst, which are comprised of employment and wages by industry and occupation at the 4-digit SIC, down to the Local Authority level. These data are updated annually and are estimated using Emsi’s proprietary methodologies (see the ‘data process’ pdf available in your Analyst system for an overview of this).

The creation of the UK Regional I-O Model depends ultimately on supply/use data, tables describing the purchasing behaviour of industries on commodities and services. Emsi uses asymmetric supply/use tables provided by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) and transforms them into a symmetric industry-by-industry transaction table at 2-digit SIC level.

In order to establish additional detail we further disaggregate it using published 4-digit SIC Emsi employment and wages data to create sector breakout ratios. The resulting processed dataset measures purchases (in pounds) of every industry and other I-O sectors from every industry at the 4-digit SIC level.
